Cathedrals

San Francisco

Johnny Hwin and Brodie Jenkins went to Stanford for college but didn't meet until they graduated and moved to San Francisco. Their first meeting, coordinated by a mutual friend, felt like a blind date, but soon after, they started playing together, forming the band Cathedrals. They released their debut EP in 2014, followed by 2015's remix EP Blush, and just wrapped up their first full-length. Hwin now lives in the Mission, while Jenkins lives in the neighborhood NOPA (North of the Panhandle), and while you wait on their album release date, allow them to give you a Bay Area tour.

Cathedrals

Venue

Cathedrals played their first show after releasing their EP at the Independent, and while they will forever love that venue, they have a couple of others on their must-play wishlist. The Fox Theater in Oakland "is just a gorgeous theater," says Jenkins, as well as the Greek Theatre in Berkeley. They also recommend checking out a bunch of the smaller venues in the Bay, including Popscene and the Swedish American Music Hall, if you are interested in a more acoustic set.

Cathedrals

Destination

Rooftop bars are a little harder to come by in San Francisco than they are in a place like New York City, and Jenkins says the best one to go to is El Techo de Lolinda in the Mission. "It has amazing drinks and great Mexican food, and it's always just a really fun hang," Jenkins says. The roof is also conveniently sheltered so that you don't feel like you're going to blow away, even on those extra windy San Francisco nights.

Dining Out

You can't go to San Francisco and not get yourself some good Mexican food, but if you want a little variety, Jenkins suggests trying Nopa—"Amazing burger, amazing cocktails"—and Bar Crudo, both in her neighborhood. Hwin also says that Mama Ji's is worth a trip to the Castro if you are craving some Shanghai-style dumplings.
