KING

Los Angeles

Twins Paris and Amber Strother and their friend Anita Bias released their debut EP, The Story, as KING in 2011. Their dreamy R&B made their follow-up release a highly anticipated one, and though it was scheduled to drop in 2014, We Are KING didn't release until 2016. "There was a lot of time spent working on new music and how we wanted to release it, business-wise," says Paris. In the end, they released it on their own label, maintaining control of their music. Now touring internationally, KING talked about their hometown, L.A., before heading to Japan.

KING

Venue

The women of KING have a soft spot for both the Lyric Theatre and the Bootleg Theatre because those are the venues where they played some of their first shows. When they aren't the ones performing, they like to check out concerts at the El Rey and still count one they saw at the Wiltern with Flying Lotus and Thundercat in 2014 among the best they've ever witnessed.

KING

Destination

Bias and the Strother sisters are not exactly bar or club people. "We're definitely into home entertainment," says Paris, "having people over, chilling, making music, and dinner parties and stuff like that." The only thing enticing enough to get them to break this cycle recently has been the Low End Theory's party on Wednesdays at the Airliner, a no-frills bar with multiple stages, where you can often check out hip-hop and electronic shows.

KING

Dining Out

The trio is into cooking at home, but when it comes to going out to eat, the decision is unanimous: Silverlake Ramen. And really, how could a place that claims to boil its ramen broth for 16 hours "for richness and taste" possibly disappoint? The menu offers rolls, bowls, and appetizers, but the members of KING suggest keeping it simple and trying the tonkotsu ramen.
