MUNA

Los Angeles

Katie Gavin, Naomi McPherson, and Josette Maskin, the three women behind MUNA, only met a few years ago as college students. After bonding over songs by the Smiths and Fiona Apple, the trio began making their own music in 2013 and never stopped. By their first show, "70 percent of the audience was old men in suits," says Gavin. "It became so industry infiltrated so quickly." MUNA dropped their Loudspeaker EP, made up of four songs written over the course of a year, this May, and already finished making their debut album. Watch for that drop in early 2017.

MUNA

Venue

MUNA played their first show at the Bootleg, but their favorite venue may be the Teragram Ballroom, where they once opened for Chairlift. The mid-sized space, with ties to New York City's Bowery Presents, just opened in the spring of 2015. "It still feels really intimate to me," says Gavin. "There's something about it that just looks regal and ancient. It's beautiful but also compact."

MUNA

Destination

Next door to Teragram is one of the band's favorite watering holes, the Monty. The bar's dark interior gives it a slightly goth vibe, while the moose head on the wall and the jukebox in the corner lighten the mood. If you're looking for something a little more upbeat, try the Lash. "That's my favorite place to go dancing," Gavin says.

Dining Out

The band says there are too many good food places in L.A. to choose just one but that at the moment, their go-to spot is Tatsu Ramen. Try the bold ramen if you are down for something a little spicy, and if you are after a vegetarian option, get the Hippie, served with a vegan broth. No matter which kind you go for, you will leave full and not too far in debt. "So much bang for your buck," says Maskin.
